Since its creation in 1993, Mr. DOB has often been interpreted as Murakami’s alter ego, referencing the symbolic language of mass-market characters such as Mickey Mouse and Doraemon while compressing cuteness, madness, consumer culture, and otaku visual language into a single image. In this work, one side features sharp teeth and multiple polychromatic eyes of varying scale, while the reverse presents half-lidded eyes and a roguish grin, expressing the dual personality of Mr. DOB through a fluid, melting form. The ears and head are covered with red and blue swirling graphics overlaid by white ring-like lines, creating a visual tension that is both pop and psychedelic.
